So 2014, not only, are we running the National Trophy Series again with at least 5 quadrathlons, but we are hosting the World Championships and we also have two World Cup Races! 2014 has been awarded to Brigg Bomber.

BQA members are very keen to continue with our Trophy Series in 2014
Trophy Prizes and Rules will remain the same
1. Perpetual trophies for Overall National Trophy Winners/plus Hoody’s
2. T-shirts for Senior, Vet 40, Vet 50, under 23.
3. Eric Hatliff Endeavour Prize – plus Hoody or Tech T

Race Affiliation

Thank -you to the 7 Races that Affiliated to us in 2013 and to the races that used BQA Insurance we hope they continue to join us in 2014.

1. Lincsquad ( Bomber) – Insurance
2. Quadrac Racing (Boxend, Wadenhoe Series) – Insurance
3. Norfolk Superheroes – Insurance
4. West Wight Quad, Race
5. Shrewsbury Quad – Insurance
6. Fabian4 Mountain Tri – Insurance
7. Awesome Foursome

8. Manvers Waterfront Boatclub have affiliated for 2014

Race Affiliation and BQA Membership is to remain the same for 2014 – £15

BQA Insurance also remains the same- Cost per athlete – £1.50 this also applies to Team members.

World Cup Affiliation

The BQA pay 100 euros each year to affiliate to World Quadrathlon Federation
in 2013 on top of our fee, the BQA paid the 50 euros to cover the World Cup
Fees for GB Races that were part of the World Series – The Bomber and Awesome Foursome.

Due to lack of members in 2013 and the consequential drop in income the BQA has to reduce its expenditure to remain stable. However the BQA have agreed to pay the WQF fee of 100 euros, but cannot afford to pay the World Cup Fees for the race organizers in 2014. So if race organizers wish to retain WQF World Cup Status they will have to pay the 50 euros fee themselves. If circumstances change the BQA will reconsider its decision.

Lincsquad and Shoreline Pursuits have both agreed to pay the WC Fee for 2014.
BQA Rules – BTF and World Cup Rules

At Shrewsbury Quadrathlon (which ran on the back of a Triathlon under BTF Rules) we had a Quadrathlete disqualified for dropping litter (a gel wrapper) we were also told we had to keep our Tri suits Zipped up as this is also a DQ offence.

The BQA should recognize the principal behind this issue rather than risk getting involved in the detail of the this particular incident. We will add the following to our rules. These can be found on the BQA website.

‘The BQA would like to remind Quadrathletes that when a Quadrathlon is run in parallel to a Triathlon, the BTF Rules apply to the whole race’.

Race Affiliation Co-ordinator – Mark Pryor

Thank-you to Mark for taking on this role for 2014.
At the beginning of 2014 he will send out The Race Affiliation pack to our BQA Race organisers containing,
1. Race Agreement Contract,
2. Affiliation Form,
3. Risk Assessment Form,
4. Race Calendar 2014.

The contract will include: fixing a date, risk assessments, insurance, first aid cover, marshals and trophy requirements. This worked very well in 2012/13 and we have had no clashes of dates.

GB Team Coordinator – Ian Smith

A Big Thank-you to Ian Smith who has taken on a new role as GB Team Coordinator.
Ian has travelled to European World Cup races over the past couple of years and he also raced at most of our British Quadrathlons. He will be able to give some help and guidance to members that want to go to WQF races in Europe, part of his role will be to bring together quadrathletes who wish to race in Europe. Ian will also be able to offer guidance on the interpretation of the GB selection criteria, and will be looking at putting together a strong enthusiastic GB team for the World Championships in Brigg. Please feel free to email Ian if you are interested in racing in WQF races .
His email is on our contacts page.

WQF Representative – Steve Hook

The BQA would like to thank Steve who has been the GB Team manager for the last few years, he is now standing down from this role, but he is continuing to support Quadrathlon as vice chairman of the WQF committee. This will be a very important year for us, as GB are to host the World Championships for the very first time, I am quite sure Lincsquad will put on a superb event and it will live up to the expectations of the WQF.

The World Quadrathlon Federation is the international sport governing body for Quadrathlon. It was established in 1990 by Sergio Ferrero, in 1997 it was developed under the guidance of Czech’s Václav Marek as the European Quadrathlon Federation. Then in 2001 converted to the WQF. Stefan Teichert is the General Secretary/Treasurer and the main point of contact.
The biggest Quadrathlon communities are currently present in Czech Republic, Great Britain and Germany.

The WQF decide which races are World and European Championships and World Cup Races. The 2014 Championships are

3.May.14 Ibiza, Spain – Middle Distance EUROPEAN Championships
25.May.14 Brigg Bomber, GB – Middle Distance WORLD Championships
21.June.14 Týn nad Vltavou, Czech – Sprint Distance EUROPEAN Championships
30.Aug.14 Berlin Man, Germany – Sprint Distance WORLD Championships

‘Never Stop the Adventure’ Jean Ashley

BQA 2013 Chairman’sReport

As another race season draws to a close and those Winter nights descend it is time to reflect on our past season and plan/ train for the next.

The National Trophy Series kicked off this year with the Brigg Bomber in May. The race was to host the National Championships, European Championships and was also a World Cup Race [so it had a lot at stake]. Steve Clark was the overall winner [this was to be Steve’s only Quad this year as he concentrated on Kona Ironman with Phil Westoby coming second and Adam Norfolk taking third. Sharon Colley [who was too destined to dominate the Ladies Quad scene this season] was the first lady home, with Lisa Dunne coming home second. A big thanks must be said to the Lincsquad team who organised a quality race worthy of its championship status.

Unfortunately the second planned Quad race on the Isle of Wight had to be cancelled due to lack of numbers; a shame as we heard that it was a fantastic race last year. This meant that the second race of the year would be the sprint Off Road Quad at Box End. Box End was also suffering from reduced numbers and the race had to be re-structured to make it a viable proposition. At the race Sharon Colley was to pick up her second win of the season, with Jean Ashley coming second. In the men’s race Adam Norfolk came first with Steve King taking second.

The Shrewsbury Sprint Quad in only its second season was to be a very popular race with a good turn out of athletes [many of them trying the sport for the first time]. At least this year the river was slower and warmer then last years conditions. Steve King was the fist male across the line with Nigel Unwin coming in second. Sharon Colley took her third straight win to sow up the ladies National Trophy Series, with Jean in second place.

The fourth race of the year was that extreme event, the Fabian 4, which this year was blessed with much kinder weather then last years storm. This is a very hard race and not for the faint hearted. Adam Norfolk showed his strength and stamina by taking first position, with Ian Smith coming second. The first lady [surprisingly, not Sharon as she did not enter] was Caroline Dallimore, with Caroline Wilson coming second.

The fifth and last race in the trophy Series was the Awsome4some held in Bude, which was also our second World Cup Race to be held in the UK this year. This is another hard race with a very testing sea swim and near vertical bike route straight from the word go. Ian Smith was to triumph on the day and also confirmed himself the winner of the Men’s National Trophy Series 2013. Nigel Unwin took another well deserved second place and Jess Lynes was the first and only lady to take up this challenging race.

This year we only had 2 GB athletes at the World Championships at Ratscher-GBR. However, small though our numbers were, both athletes came back with medals. Ian Smith came 6th overall and took 1st [gold] place in V50 and Keith Longney came 11th and took Bronze in the V50 category. Congratulations to both athletes for doing a great job representing the BQA.

This year the BQA has seen a slump in personal membership, but a large increase in the numbers signing up to our Face book page! Membership fee’s and race affiliation are the BQA’s only source of income! If we do not have the membership we will not be able to function! There will be no National Trophy series and no National Body and no race insurance for some event organisers! If the sport of Quadrathlon is going to continue in its present form then we need your support! Please become a member in 2014 by downloading the form from the BQA website and it will only cost you £15.00.

The fate of the BQA and Quadrathlon in the UK rests in your hands!

Just to remind you that you need to be a member of the BQA to qualify for the National Trophy series.

This is my last year as Chairman as I will be stepping down for a new person to take the helm [if you feel you can take on the roll then please let Jean know]. Jean Ashley will continue to handle the day to day running of the BQA. We all owe a big thanks to Jean and her family as they are the backbone of the BQA, without their input we would not exist. I would also like to thank all the event organisers and their teams for all their hard work putting on some extremely varied and brilliant races this year.

I wish you all best in your future Quadrathlon Seasons!

BQA CHAIRMAN [out going]

BQA Annual Report

CHAIRMANS REPORT 2012 by Mark Pryor
2012 gave us a great feel good factor, with the likes of the Olympics and the Golden Jubilee Celebrations, with numerous GB athletes leading their field winning medals and World Titles . However, the UK Quadrathlon scene had highs and lows, ranging from the prestige of hosting two World Cup races, to some disappointing low turn outs at other races.
The Deeside Race was the first race of the season [and the National trophy Series] but only a few hardy athletes braved the Scottish elements. Mick Weir was to win the race with Colin Calder coming second. Unfortunately no Ladies took up the challenge this year.
The Adventure Challenge [organised by Lincsquad] was the second race in the
National Trophy Series and was hampered by bad weather, but the athletes were not to be phased. Matt Foulger was the first male to cross the line with Ian Smith coming a respectable second. In the Ladies event the infamous “Jean Ashley” was first with Alison Deykin taking second.
Unfortunately the Extreme 5 Quad was not able to be run this year. However, we
were lucky to have a new Quad over on the Isle of Wight which, unfortunately, was subject to high winds [the weather seems have played a big factor in most races this year] and the proposed paddle route around the Needles had to be changed. The southerly location and bad weather seemed to reduce entry levels. However, we received some good reports about this being a worth while quality race Ian Smith was the overall winner. It will be joining us in the Trophy Series next year. It is fantastic to see a new race on the south coast.
In June Russell Breyer travelled over to Germany to take part in the Oberpfalzer
Seenland Quad. This was only Russell’s third ever Quad and he came away with
third place in the MV50 class. He thoroughly enjoyed the race and definitely
recommends it.  June also saw the Norfolk Superhero Challenge take place. This team Quad challenge [its not open to individuals] was well attended and raised some well deserved money for charity.

July saw our third National Trophy Race, in the form of the “Brigg Bomber” which also doubled up as the National & European Championships, as well as being a world cup series race. Yet again the British weather showed its ugly head and high water levels on the Ancholme meant that the race format had to be changed. Some may say it was an even better race. This was to be a hard fought race with some high quality athletes from abroad pushing up the standards and giving our guys a run for their money., Matt Stephenson showed his racing colours and came away with the National & European Championship trophies, with the World Quadrathlon President, Stefan Teichent, coming second. In the ladies class, Becky Schofield became both the National and European Champion, with Kathryn King coming second. We also had some age group winners in the form of: Nigel Crowe [Vet50 M]; Tom Stead [U23 M] and Jean Ashley [Vet50 Ladies]. It has been recently announced that the “Brigg Bomber” will again both host the National & European Championships next year.
At last we had a race without any weather related problems [unfortunately it did clash with the Olympics], the Box End Sprint Quad. This enclosed X/C course saw a closely contested race with Matt Stephenson crossing the line first a mere 27 seconds ahead of Adam Norfolk. Roz Giles was the first lady home. Tom Stead, now an incredibly old 16, was improving with every race and was fourth overall.
Unfortunately we did not have an organised G/B Team to represent us at the World Quadrathlon Championships over in the Czech Republic. However, a few enthusiastic individuals took up the challenge and put on a good showing for the UK. Matt Stephenson was our highest place athlete coming in 5th place. We did pick up Silver in the men’s team event. Hopefully, next year we will be able to field a bigger team.
In early September we saw the first ever Shrewsbury Quad. This brand new sprint saw a full entry and, possibly the fastest swim on the race circuit, in the fast flowing waters of the River Seven. This was the 5th race in the Trophy Series and showed excellent potential and pedigree. Matt came first yet again [he really has dominated the UK race scene this year] with Sharon Colley taking the first ladies slot. We look forward to seeing this new race again next year.
On the same weekend as the Shrewsbury Quad, a few G/B athletes travelled over to Germany to take part in the World Sprint Quadrathlon Championships. The UK’s own “Tom Stead” became the World Junior Champion, to add to his growing list of achievements.
Mid September saw the 6th and final Trophy Race in the Bude Awesome Foursome, a truly fitting and challenging setting for the last race. Bude was also
designated a World Cup Series race. Unusually Bude was blessed with calm weather and flat seas, this is unheard off! This was to be another strongly contested race where Matt’s skill in the swim and speed on the bike could not hold of Stefan’s supremacy in the kayak that lead to Stefan’s eventual win. Yet another hard fought and excellent race, this again will have World Cup status in 2013. At the end of the trophy series, Matt Stephenson and Jean Ashley both respectively won overall, with Phil Binch, Alison Deykin and Tom Stead picking up age group wins. Tom Stead was also awarded the Eric Hatliff trophy for Endeavour for his success at National, European and World levels.
Bude was the last Trophy race but not the last race of the year.

This was the Fabian 4 race which turned out to be the hardest race of the year in extreme weather. With gale force winds, gusting up to 55mph, and torrential rain the race was interesting to say the least. The Estuary paddle, fell run and MTB ride in the hills of North Wales turned out to be an epic adventure which everyone enjoyed. The team at “Map 7” put on an extremely hard race in harsh conditions. This race will be joining us as part of the trophy series next year.
It has been an interesting year with the UK holding two World Cup races and holding the European Championships.

Some challenging weather at a lot of races and the ever so present economic down turn hampering the racing scene. I would like to thank all the race organisations who throughout the year put on some excellent races and I look forward to next year.
Also a big thanks to everyone who helped out with the running of the BQA, especially Jean Ashley, whose constant hard work is the back bone of our organisation. Looking ahead to next year I hope to see increased numbers at all events to make them worth running. You can all support the BQA by joining us, details can be found on the membership page: Membership and affiliation fees remain the same for 2013.
Next year will be my last year as Chairman and I hope that it is a successful one for the sport of Quadrathlon. A big thanks to everyone who organised and took part in Quads this year and I look forward to seeing you all at a race next season.

GB Team Leader/manager – Steve Hook
Hi all, as many of you know I had a slightly rough year, well now that things
are settling, and even though I am very busy, I want to work with as many as
possible towards getting a competitive team for the Worlds, the Europeans
(now at Brigg), and to see if we can get the numbers ramped up in our home
events. We want to spread the word amongst the triathlon events and
kayaking events, that the true sporting challenge is in Quadrathlon. I do want
to have a training weekend in the spring, all details will be sent out to BQA
members and put on our BQA website and facebook page, so please contact
me if you’re interested and would like to attend.
regards
Steve Hook

have a rear zip now and will cost about £65 but payment will be needed
upfront.

Chairman’s Chatter

Despite the economic and social difficulties this year, 2011 has been a reasonable year for Quadrathlon. With: 6 Quad events in the National Trophy series [running the length of the country]; a large charity Quad; various World Cup Race around Europe and a winter Quad series the sport of Quadrathlon is a live and kicking.. We even had two World cup races in the UK, hosted at the Brigg Bomber and The Awsome Foursome in Bude.

One of the highlights of the year was theBritish Team travelling out to the World Championships in the Czech Republic. The team was lead by our new GB Team Manager [Steve Hook] who has recently been selected as Vice president of The World Quadrathlon Federation. The team came back from the World Champs with a handful of trophies and some World Champion age group winners [full results on the BQA website]. Well done to all.

In the National Trophy Series, Steve Clark narrowly beat Mat Stephenson to take the men’s trophy with Alison Dykin taking the title in the Ladies event. Along
with, Phil Binch, who won the Eric Hatliff Trophy [for Endeavour] they each will received £300 of vouchers from our sponsors:Thule

Looking forward to 2012, it promises to be an exciting year. Linsquad have introduced two sprint races to run along side their middle distance events: The North Lincs Adventure Challenge and the Brigg Bomber. There is also a strong possibility of 2 more sprint races on next year’s calendar. One new event is proposed to run on the Isle of Wight, including a paddle around the Needles [sounds great]. Also in the pipe line is a sprint Quad to be tagged on to the newly formed Shrewsbury Triathlon.

We hope that a Kayak Triathlon will be running up in North Wales in September, featuring: an ascent of the River Conway, a fell run and finishing of with a mountain bike ride all in the beautiful surroundings of the Snowdonia National Park.

Along with the National Trophy Series and the European World Cup Races, the future of Quadrathlon has never looked so good in the UK.

However the British Quadrathlon Association [BQA], who works hard on your behalf, needs your help. You can support us by signing up to the BQA for a mere £15.00. We need the funds to keep the BQA well oiled machine [some may say] working. The funds raised from the BQA Membership ensure that we can continue to run and organise the National Trophy Series and represent the interest of the sport in the UK and on the World stage. Membership forms for 2012 available on our website now.

It would also be very helpful if as many people as possible could sign up to our facebook page [link from BQA website]. In this modern, busy, high tech world, Facebook and the internet are readily available and is an ideal way to keep intouch with fellow athletes and find out all the up to date information about
Quadrathlon. Along side our website you should find all the up to date information.

It just leaves me to say a big thanks to all the event organisers, BQA committee and competitors who have made our interesting and diverse multisport event such a success this year. Make sure you keep up your winter training [why not try out the Wadenhoe Winter Series] ready for a good racing season next year.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas a happy and successful sporting New Year in 2012.

Mark Pryor
