Box End Sprint Quadrathlon
2009 National Championships

The sun shone and the conditions were good, though a little bit muddy on the bike from the previous days rain. There were lots of smiles and some great perfomances too from all the athletes taking part, a total of 42!

The two main contenders in the mens race were Keith Longney and Andy Grimwood. Keith coming first out of the swim, was overtaken by Andy's excellent kayaking, Keith peddled hard to catch Andy just before the start of the run, and his strong running moved him into the lead. Richard Beard and Peter Hart also had a closely contended race for the Vet 50 title, but Richard held onto the lead.

In the Ladies Race Helen Dyke was first out of the swim, but Jean Ashley moved into the lead during her strong kayak leg. Jean was overtaken by Helen on the second lap of the bike, closely followed by Christine Johnson who put in a very fast bike leg. Helen's running was unbeatable, she put in the overall fasted run leg of the day, and went on to take the womens title. Christine Johnson 2nd, Jean Ashley 3rd, closely followed by a very much improved Anita Buxton.

If their had been a team prize Lincsquad would have taken it, 4 members in the top 12. Andy Grimwood came 2nd but they had excellent performances from Dan Broughton (1st senior male), Phill Binch and Steve Bullivant.

The Junior event was a closely fought battle between in both the male and female catagories, (same course, just 2 laps on the bike leg). 14 year old Ryan Hunt lead the way in the swim and kayak, but 16 year old Alex Copestake had a very strong bike and run to just take first place by 15 seconds! Sisters Kate (17) and Lucy Ashley (15) again had a close race Lucy lead the way out of the swim but was overtaken by her older sister at the end of the kayak, where she maintained her fisrt place.

It was great to see some new faces giving Quadrathlon a go for the first time, hopefully they all enjoyed it and will be back for more. Keep visiting our website for Quadrathlon Updates!
